谈谈 “女人” 与 “女孩子”、“woman” 与 “girl” 的用法

     每当说到年轻的女性，什么时候用 “girl”（女孩子），什么时候用 “woman”（女人）这两个词呢？在这点，英语和汉语有所不同。这个问题值得考虑考虑，因为我们常常可以听到说中文的美国人或说英语的中国人犯这方面的错误。

 

     比如。。。

 

     曾经有一位中国网友当我们聊天时，我用英语夸她说： “ You are an intelligent woman。” 她竟因此生了我的气。

 

     还有好几回，看过中国朋友写英语简历或者介绍信的时候，出现这样的句子： “I am a typical Chinese girl。”

 

     另外，立庄也说她常常听到美国学生把英语的 “I know that woman。” 翻译成“我认识那个女人。”

 

     以上所说的错误都在何处呢？

 

     生气的那位网友应该知道，英语中的 “woman” 没有一丝一毫贬义。其实英语中，提到青年女性时，如说 “woman” 才是表示尊敬的态度。我是一个44 岁的男人。如果我对一个不太熟的美国年轻女性说 “ You are an intelligent girl。” 她八成会因为 “girl” 这个字而愤怒。在美国，只有好友之间才可以互称 “girl”。当然，凡是18 岁以下的女孩子还都可以称之为 “girl”。

 

     在介绍信或简历中写 “I am  a typical Chinese girl。” 的错误是什么呢？英语中的 “girl” 一词非常不职业化，永远不能在简历中说自己是 “girl”。还有，给陌生人写介绍信时，如果把自己称为 “girl” 也会给人留下一个错误的印象。人家可能会以为你是一个不太正经的人。

 

     我们学汉语的美国学生们也都会犯同样的错误。中文老师们应当教我们把英文句子 “I know that woman” 翻译成： “我认识那个女的”、“我认识那位女士” 或者 “我认识那位小姐” 才好。不要说 “我认识那个女人。”

 

     天知道为什么这些中文用词和英语用词之间会具有如此不同之处。是不是因为美国妇女运动的影响？不管原因是什么，我们都应该了解这些用词的差异，以免在网上聊天时，产生误会！

    除了第二个是girl，其他都是woman，哈！

    以前还真的没注意过girl和woman，我一直都把我身边的女性统称为woman，她们的孩子就是girl啦。。:D

    Further more, what is the difference between "woman" and "lady"? Such as in —

    1. You are an intelligent woman.
    2. You are an intelligent lady.

    The second sentence sounds a bit strange, but I dont know why.

    是的，除了第二个之外，其他都是WOMAN。
    在我的印象中，WOMAN是指欧巴桑。现在终于理解了，谢谢你。

    这个问题似乎在上次我们见面时，有聊到过。
    不过，我还是不太会分辨women和girl，主要是判断依据，是按照年纪来？还是按照亲密程度来呢？

    So Can you tell me more  the difference of "Lady" and "Woman " ? I thought "Lady" is for those single female, and "woman" for mature female, generally for those married. Am I right?

    在中国，一般称呼二十岁以下的女性，会让她们感到不舒服。甚至二十出头的姑娘，也不乐意被称做女人。女人，这个词，包含着性的成熟的意思。而在中国，性是个不宜在公共场所谈论的话题。特别对于女性，性的话题是比较敏感的。
    我以前很避讳说女人这个词，总是用女性，女子代替。上大学后，好多了。渴望自己赶快成熟长大。

    嗯，前阵子还在bbs上看到有人在说“都30岁了还自称是girl”，这样看来用词确实不当

    嗯，实际上，在中国一些年轻人里面，“女孩”和“女人”之间的分别，隐含着是不是Virgin，在有些观念比较保守的人看来，你称呼一个Virgin为女人，她当然就比较愤怒了……

    呵呵，有意思。不过我倒没觉得，如果说对方“，，，的女人”会让对方生气，只要不是贬义，哈哈
    其实还有很多用语能反映出中西传统文化的差异。在称呼方面，还是很有说道的。
    很佩服你中文写得比较好，不知道说得怎么样？：）

    英领馆的某个领事握手时对我说了句
    "thank you ma\’am"
    第一反应是,我有这么老吗,都ma\’am了
    事后想来也许是表示尊重?

    Take it easy, I usually spell wrong words.
     
    Last time I write a sentence like "I am a guy about 21 years old" , but by mistake I write  "I am a gay about 21 years old.

    也许是因为中西文化的差异,因为中国人比较保守,在还没有出阁的姑娘都称之为girl.特别是在农村,更是比较忌讳女孩和女人的混称.如果你要是把女孩称之为女人的话,那么你一定会让别人生气的.hehe~~~
